Metaverse Pokémon-inspired game Axie Infinity recently announced the completion of a $2.5 million sale for a virtual plot of land, making this the most expensive single plot of virtual land according to the official tweet.
This virtual real estate is specifically a plot of Genesis land, which is one of the many types available in-game. The Axie homeland, Lunacia, is made up of tokenised plots of land which serves as homes and bases of operations for their in-game creatures called Axies. These plots can be upgraded with resources and crafting ingredients that are gained from playing the game.
Prior to this, a virtual real estate in Decentraland was sold for 618,000 MANA on Monday — equivalent to roughly $3.2 million at time of purchase. Tokens.com reported that it was for an estate of 116 land parcels
The subject of metaverse, or shared virtual environments, has garnered significant interest as of late. Social media giant Facebook announced on October that it would rename its corporation to Meta, which signals their increasing focus on the sector.
The value of the cryptocurrencies linked to the virtual world has also skyrocketed, with Decentraland’s MANA and Gala Games’ GALA increasing by 12.86% and 216.63% respectively in the past seven days.
