Polygon, the popular blockchain network, has revealed its ambitious plan for Polygon 2.0, which aims to establish a network of zero-knowledge-powered Layer 2 blockchains. The team behind Polygon is focused on building a system of interconnected chains that will enable instantaneous and secure cross-chain interactions without relying on additional trust assumptions.
While Polygon currently operates a proof-of-stake sidechain network called Polygon POS and a Layer 2 network based on ZK-Rollups called Polygon zkEVM, the team is now preparing to develop additional Layer 2s utilizing ZK-Rollups. This move will allow for the creation of individual chains that can interact securely with each other, forming ecosystems similar to Cosmos and Polkadot.
The motivation behind Polygon 2.0 is to address the scalability limitations of individual blockchains, which have strict throughput limits. By leveraging ZK-Rollups and developing interconnected Layer 2 chains, Polygon aims to overcome these limitations without compromising liquidity, security, or capital efficiency.
Polygon has already demonstrated its interest in creating multiple chains through its software stack called SuperNets, having developed chains for projects like Immutable and Aavegotchi. However, with Polygon 2.0, the focus will shift towards building interconnected chains using ZK-Rollups.
The team at Polygon envisions this initiative as the establishment of the “Value Layer of the Internet,” highlighting their commitment to creating a robust and scalable infrastructure for decentralized applications and cryptocurrencies.
