Hacker Behind $200M Euler Attack Returns Millions in Ether and Dai, Issues Apology Message

According to reports, the individual responsible for the Euler Finance $200M exploit has returned millions of dollars in Ether and Dai to the protocol and apologized for their deeds. The attacker, who now goes by the name Jacob, sent over $10 million worth of Dai stablecoins to Euler and 7,000 Ether over the last 12 hours, returning the total amount to over $120 million.

Blockchain data reveals that the hacker encoded a message expressing regret for their actions and requesting forgiveness in a transaction. The message read, “I messed with other people’s money, jobs, and lives, and I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. Please forgive me.”

In another blockchain message, Jacob stated that they intended to return all the funds to Euler and apologized for any misunderstandings. “I will return the remainder of the money as soon as possible. I am only concerned with my safety, so there has been a delay. I’m sorry for any miscommunication,” the message said.

Previously, Euler had threatened legal action and offered the hacker a $1 million bounty in exchange for the funds. Nonetheless, it appears that the hacker’s change of heart may have prevented a protracted legal battle.

Earlier this month, the lending protocol was subjected to an exploit that caused a loss of almost $200M loss across four transactions involving wrapped Bitcoin, Dai, staked Ether, and USD coin. The attacker employed a flash loan technique to deceive the protocol into believing it held different quantities of eToken and dToken.

The returning of the funds by the hacker is surprising for the crypto community, with some speculating that Jacob may have been coerced to return the funds or had a change of heart. Regardless of the motive, the return of such a significant amount of money is welcome news for Euler Finance and the users.

The incident underscores the importance of security in the crypto space and serves as a reminder that even the most advanced protocols are vulnerable to hacks and exploits. However, it also demonstrates that the crypto community can come together to address these issues and work toward a solution.
