According to Chinese finance news publication Sina Finance, China released a report on April 26 regarding its blockchain-based People’s Copyright system, which helps to safeguard the copyright of news publications against infringement or re-printing in China. The system was filed officially under the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on Saturday, which coincidentally was World Intellectual Property day. Since its launch in 2019 and up until Q1 2020, People’s Copyright has managed to register the copyrights for 2 million news articles and can differentiate between a billion articles, equivalent to three years’ worth of published news reports.
Copyright infringement and stealing content from original authors is nothing new in the sphere of content creation, especially when it comes to online written content. The report states that 60% of authors who publish news articles find their works being stolen, while original manuscripts are stolen “up to 3.64 times” per piece of work. On the internet, protecting one’s own intellectual property is difficult to police and detection may only occur months or even years from the publication date.
“Since it was launched, “People’s Copyright” has protected the copyrights of 2,030,890 original news reports. The number of manuscripts being monitored in real-time across the entire network has reached an average of 2,871,903 per day, and the total amount checked is more than one billion articles throughout the year,” Sina Finance reported.
Moreover, the People’s Copyright system connects users to legal service options in the case of actual copyright infringement under its digital rights protection segment, featuring a “authoritative judicial service system” which includes online courts, lawyers, arbitration and more.
Built by Chinese tech company People’s Online, it is the firm’s hope that copyright infringement cases are reduced with the help of blockchain technology, which would in turn encourage more authors to upload their content for sharing in a safe environment where the rights to their works are protected.
